RNFA Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family entered care in the OR and other areas of Perioperative Services for all patient populations. Functions as an RN First Assist during Operative and other invasive procedures and throughout the Perioperative continuum in accordance withe the scope of practice credentials, privileges, experience, education and competency verification. Functions as a member of the surgical team in room preparation, turnover, and facilitation of the daily surgery schedule.

Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrates anatomy and physiology particular to the requirements of the surgical procedure; creates and maintains a sterile field; provides equipment and supplies based on the patient's needs and physician's preferences; performs sponge, sharps and instrument counts; administers drugs and solutions as prescribed; physiologically monitors patients during surgery; monitors and controls the environment; performs decontamination functions; operates as a RN Circulator as needed

  • Collects patient data on a systematic and continuous basis throughout clinical interactions, demonstrating consideration of growth and developmental needs; formulates nursing diagnoses based on health status data and establishes patient care goals based on nursing diagnoses; develops a plan of care that prescribes nursing actions to achieve patient goals; evaluates patient outcomes and measures effectiveness of nursing care. implements nursing actions in transferring the patient according to the prescribed plan

  • Performs nursing and first assist actions that demonstrate accountability including performance improvement. Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as applicable. Use problem solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members. Serve as an educator, mentor, consultant, and resource to peers, colleagues and others in relation to RNFA activities.

  • Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects. Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activates applicable to RN and RNFA activities.

Employment Qualifications

Education Qualifications - List the minimum education, training, and experience required to perform the essential functions of the position.

Required Minimum Education:

2 Year/ Associates Degree with ability to obtain BSN within 3 years of hire

Preferred Education:

4 year/ Bachelor’s Degree

Specialty/Major:

Licensure/Certification Required:

Current nursing license in the State of Ohio

BLS- through American Heart Association required

RNFA training program completion at time of hire

Minimum qualifications:

2 years of Perioperative RN or RNFA experience

Licensure/Certification Preferred:

Hold national certification in clinical specialty or leadership within 6 months of eligibility

Surgical Assistant Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Functions as the first/second assist during operative and other invasive procedures in accordance with credentials, privileges, expertise, education and competency verification. Functions as a member of the surgical team in room preparation, turnover, and facilitation of the daily surgery schedule.

Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and physiology relating to surgical procedures. Displays ability to relate knowledge to assist the surgeon. Positions patient on the operating room table maintaining proper body alignment. Assists with providing the patient with a safe and supportive environment by demonstrating and understanding of patient rights, abuse and appropriate interventions and Advance Directives.

  • Functions as a first/second assistant by providing exposure through correct use of instruments, retractors, suction, and sponging techniques as directed by the surgeon. Handling and dissecting tissues as directed by the surgeon. Clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points and ligating vessels as directed by the surgeon. Place drains and suture muscle, facia, subcutaneous and skin as direction by the surgeon.

  • Serves as a resource to peers, colleagues, and others in relation to first/second assist activities. Demonstrates and promotes teamwork. Collaborate effectively with other disciplines as applicable. Use problem solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members. Promotes cost containment efforts.

  • Maintains regulatory, credentialing and privileging requirements necessary for practice as a first assist. Participate in ongoing education and competency verification activities. Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.

Graduate of a Surgical Assistant program or equivalent

Preferred Education:

4 year/ Bachelor’s Degree

Graduate of a Surgical Assistant program or equivalent

Licensing/ Certification - If registration, certification or licensure is required, include the name of the accrediting or licensing body.

Licensure/Certification Required:

BLS- through American Heart Association required

Licensure/Certification Preferred:

CST or CSA, CSFA, SA-C or equivalent certification
