What You Will DoThe Sr Specialist Performance Improvement is responsible for development and implementation of Sharp Grossmont's Performance Improvement standards, including responsibilities relating to leading teams in the utilization of Change Acceleration Process and PI tools and providing feedback to managers, directors and executives. The Sr Specialist Performance Improvement leads performance improvement by working collaboratively with customers, colleagues and the department leaders to drive improved operational results.This position is responsible for data analysis and reporting to operational and leadership teams/committees governing boards to drive performance excellence as well as meet regulatory requirements, laws and hospital policies and procedures.This position is responsible for assuring efficient, safe and excellent, evidence-based quality of services and assuring timely and accurate review of key operational metrics in compliance with the hospital's performance improvement.This position assists the hospital's executive team, service lines, operational areas and medical staff in identifying real and potential performance issues through measurement and analysis along with concurrent and retrospective review of performance information. Assists with operational planning and development of the hospital's performance improvement plan; provides daily work direction to support staff to achieve objectives of the performance improvement plan. The Sr. Specialist Performance Improvement is also responsible for ensuring compliance with requirements set by regulatory agencies and hospital policies and procedures.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related field

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in hospital and/or medical office environment with focus on analysis, performance improvement, quality assurance, or computer programming.

  • Previous operational acute care experience

  • Current knowledge of JC, state, and federal regulatory agency requirements, standards and regulations, particularly those related to PI.

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation programs

  • Advanced skills in analysis, problem solving and trouble shooting

  • Ability to effectively work with Sharp executives, management, staff, physicians, and others to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to achieve results for the organization with and through people; to practice good time management, and to demonstrate good leadership skills.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate data analysis for clinical decision making, research, and program evaluation.

  • Knowledge of healthcare environment; IS principles and practices; the impact of clinical and financial data on the legal, ethical, managerial, and organizational principles and standards for acute general hospitals and integrated health systems.

Essential Functions

  • Data analysisUtilizes independent judgment, training and experience to recognize variances in hospital performance and opportunities for performance improvement. Directs hospital service lines, operational areas and medical staff in implementation of practices and procedures to improve operations.Identifies statistical trends in data through utilization of independent judgment, training and operational experience in analysis of key operational metrics, case reviews, system reviews, and/or of clinical data.Conducts accurate, comprehensive and systematic reviews of facility and physician performance and ongoing measurement of operational process and outcome data through utilization of independent judgment, training and experience.Manages data and expert analyses for hospital-wide throughput, experience and safety initiatives.

  • InnovationProactively identifies opportunities to translate and adopt best/promising practices from within and outside the organization and industry to advance strategic and operational goals.Applies creativity and effective change strategies to performance opportunities to achieve break through results.Uses strong data analysis and research methodologies to assess effectiveness of innovative performance improvement efforts and works to implement validation approaches.Collaborates with entity and system resources to document and publish studies and results of performance improvement work.

  • LeadershipStrong Communication Skills (Verbal and Written), Presentation Skills and Patience.Leads and manages work teams based on organization goals and performance improvement needs.Facilitates multi-disciplinary PI teams to address and resolve identified operational issues and improve performance.Assumes responsibilities for own professional development by attending courses and at the request of leadership, seek continuing education to enhance job function and stay abreast of regulatory changes.

  • Performance ImprovementDetermines and implements appropriate performance improvement process, including Change Acceleration Process and Lean Six Sigma to drive improvements in entity, department, and physician performance.Expert in change management processes (CAP) and tools.Able to lead performance improvement and rapid action teams in projects, Work-Outs, Root Cause Analyses and FMEAS.Works collaboratively with entity leaders to set and achieve entity goals and meet individual annual objectives.Maintains constructive and collegial relations and collaborates with the medical staff leadership, risk management and clinical/ancillary/support service managers/leads in cross-functional process improvement, open communication and problem solving.Provides education and technical support specifically for the development, implementation and maintenance of PI activities.Effectively uses ongoing monitoring techniques including statistical analysis to sustain improved processes.

  • Project managementFacilitates successful performance improvement through collaboration with medical staff leaders and entity leaders to provide for patient safety and excellent operational and clinical outcomes.Rounds on hospital departments to evaluate opportunities and implementation of process improvements.Supports business development projects by providing data analysis, forecasts, business modeling and market research and collaborates with entity and system partners on growth initiatives.Manages follow-up with teams/work groups to ensure projects are completed and ongoing data collection is managed and documented as needed.Provides report-out on team process and outcomes to leadership-managers, directors and executives.Completes other assigned projects including dealing with unanticipated urgent assignments.
