ProMedica Health System Child Life Specialist I - Ebeid Children's Hospital - Part Time - Days in Toledo, Ohio

We are a 151-bed facility that caters to the hospitalization needs of children and adolescents. In fact, we are the region's only hospital exclusively for children accredited by the Joint Commission. We offer a 60-bed newborn intensive care unit that has individual patient rooms designed to mimic the sheltered environment of a mother's womb. We also care for pediatric cancer patients in our state-of-the-art - yet fun and whimsical - Debbie Brass Children's Cancer Center. In addition, for 15 consecutive years, residents of Greater Toledo have named us the Consumer Choice Award winner in our market. In fact, we’re the only hospital in northwest Ohio to receive this honor.

Position Summary :

The Child Life Specialist is a member of the healthcare team who focuses on the emotional and developmental needs of children and families to reduce the stress and anxiety associated with the healthcare experience. Therapeutic interventions are performed through education, preparation and play to assist children and families in coping with hospitalization. Other duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide individualized therapeutic interventions to assist with the support of emotional, cognitive, and developmental needs

  • Normalize the environment to reduce anxiety associated with the hospital setting

  • Ability to provide developmentally appropriate preparation/procedural support/diversion for hospital procedures

  • Encourage family centered care by providing psychosocial support services to parents while encouraging parent participation in child’s care

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Family Studies, Counseling, Education or other closely related field

  • Prefer prior experience working with children in a healthcare setting

  • Requires effective interpersonal skills, ability to understand directions, communicate and respond to inquiries

  • Ability to interact with seriously ill children of all developmental levels, their siblings, parents and extended family members.
